Work Without Borders
Creating a community of global citizens requires a commitment to fostering intercultural understanding.
One way that UBC provides staff with a rewarding international experience is through Leave for Change, an initiative of Uniterra, a major Canadian voluntary cooperation and international development program. Each year, up to six staff are selected to volunteer their professional skills and experience in a developing country during their annual vacation time.
In recent years, UBC’s Leave for Change participants have volunteered in Vietnam, Nepal, Botswana, Malawi, Senegal, Bolivia, and Guatemala. Watch the video to learn about the Leave for Change experiences of Darran Fernandez and Gulnur Birol.

I am in my first year of a phd in curriculum studies at ubc. I’m also a high school teacher with the Vancouver School Board. I spent 3 months in Kenya as part if my masters research studying the water crisis there. I am interested in promoting water projects and education. Keep up the good work you are all doing. I know the many challenges that you are faced with when doing international development.
