Nintendo’s generous donation of 15 Wii systems and 15 Wii Balance Boards and Wii Fit Plus software has enabled UBC’s Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy in the Faculty of Medicine to begin assessing whether the entertainment systems can be repurposed for rehabilitation exercises. The researchers have found that social play can offset the difficulties of rehab for wheelchair users with spinal cord injuries, stroke patients and older adults with mobility issues.
